Billy Ray Cyrus is honoring a teacher who lost his life in a school shooting last fall.  The country star paid tribute to 8th grade math teacher and Army National Guard veteran Michael Landsberry during his performance Saturday at the Red, White, and Tahoe Blue festival in Incline Village, Nevada.

Prior to the event, organizer Jim Smith told the Sierra Sun Cyrus wanted to play the special show.  He said the singer contacted them and asked if he could "provide a tribute to Michael" at the event.

Cyrus' guitarist Brandon Friesen adds that Landsberry's loved ones were the singer's focus from the start.  He said when he mentioned the show, Billy Ray asked if they could "reach out to the family" and "if he could do a few special things" for them.

Landsberry was shot and killed last October as he tried to talk a 12-year-old student into surrendering his gun.

Billy Ray performed twice at the event.  In addition to Saturday's full show, he made a special appearance Friday night to sing "Some Gave All" with the Reno Philharmonic.  Cyrus also performed the song on Saturday, dedicating it to Landsberry, while Michael's widow was recognized as well.
